Masters @ URSLC
Over the past few years the ranks of the Rox Masters group have swelled considerably and competitively we rank amongst the strongest Masters club sections in South Africa. Anyone over the age of 30 can compete as a Master. Importantly, pretty much like a golf handicap, we compete in our own similar age categories. Our youngest Master is 30 and our oldest are in their 60’s.
There are some lifesaving legends and world title holders who still compete for and coach at Rox. So we fully understand the proud legacy we need to keep intact and hand over. However as competitive as we are, the idea is to train hard together, stay healthy, utilize our collective and individual knowledge and experience to bring the youngsters through and mostly to have fun doing this.
The ocean can be a dynamic and dangerous thing and thus the experience mentioned earlier is critical when handing over knowledge of not the just the ocean but how to handle different conditions and scenarios. Perhaps most importantly, much of the growth in the Masters section has  come in the form of men and women who never grew up as lifesavers, but were attracted by the healthy lifestyle.
We train collectively on a Sunday with beach sessions under 3 world class technical coaches in Sean Carew, Derek Morris and Simon Vickers, Â starting at 7:45 on the beach in front of the club. This is followed by an ocean session also under the guidance of the legendary Matthew Bouman and Tregue Minnaar, both highly successful former national competitors themselves.Â
In order to compete you need to be a qualified lifeguard, but the club steers everyone through this fascinating learning process. So regardless of your age, male or female, come down and give it a try. If you want to know more just pop down on any Sunday or give us a call.
